Great Ocean Road Trippin

I’ve been a blogging machine lately and although I would like to think it’s because I am highly motivated the real truth is that I am just barely able to keep up with myself! As promised, here is Part Two of our birthday week extravaganza, kicking off an amazing road trip on the Great Ocean Road! After (a very scary/windy/sketchy) landing in Avalon, about an hour outside of Melbourne, we set out for the sea. We had a four hour drive to reach our destination for the evening, Port Campbell, so we took it pretty easy. Drives are so much better when you don't have to think about getting somewhere by a certain time...no traffic jams, or impatient waits at the lights, just a lot of curvy roads, gorgeous views and frequent stops to get out and discover new places. It was brilliant to finally have those long days again! The sun didn’t go down until about 8 o’clock...and man do those extra hours make a difference! When we reached the sleepy little one horse town every restaurant was closed, it wasn't even 9 o'clock and we hadn't had dinner yet! Luckily the local pubs never really ever close down in this country...and they were able to come to the rescue by scooping us some really yummy soup from the kitchen (which was closed...who needs food when you have beer?).

On Monday we basked in the glorious sunshine at Lockhead Gorge, a beautiful scenic cove that became well known because of two young survivors who washed up to shore there many many years ago surviving a shipwreck that had no other survivors. I couldn't help but think that if there had to be somewhere to reach land, this wouldn't be such a shabby place to end up!

Then we followed the crowds of tourists out to the viewing platform to see the 12 Apostles...which are now more like 7 Apostles as some of the rocks have eroded away and washed out to sea.

We were in a complete wind vortex on the viewing platform, i swear if I would have jumped a gust would have swept me out to sea with the other 5 Apostles! It even popped a lens right out of Dave's sunnies!

We were told that you can only see these monumental rocks from the viewing platform...but we weren't willing to settle for views from any old viewing platform. So upon further exploration we climbed down Gibson’s Steps to the beach and made the trek over towards the Apostles. What a gorgeous and peaceful place to be! All of life’s problems seem to disappear when nature reminds you how small you really are.

One of my most favorite moments of our trip was a pit stop to a lookout spot called Moonlight Heads. We discovered this gem while I was shopping in Brisbane. I was hyped about the upcoming trip and looking for a cute outfit to take with me. I got chatting about it with the owner of this cute little boutique and her partner, who was kicking around the shop, said you have to check out Moonlight Heads, he was right.
